Ioannis Kapodistrias’ Cigarette Case Auctioned for €73,000

A cigarette case which belonged to Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first governor of Greece, was sold at an auction on Tuesday for €73,392.

The auction, conducted by Vergos House, was divided into two areas, Modern Greek Painting and Philhellenic and Historical Objects. The was considered a great success as seventy-eight percent of the items were sold, fetching a total of €1,110,971.

The appearance of many new buyers as well as the high prices some items received sent a positive message about trends in the Greek art market and overall confidence in the Greek economy.

There was fierce competition for the acquisition of modern artworks by Yiannis Tsarouchis, with his “Studies for May” selling for € 57,834 and his “Art – Eros” fetching a price of €12,209.

Yiannoulis Halepas’ sculptures “Ornithocleptus” and “Cognac” sold for €20,794 each, while “Thalassografia” by Ioannis Altamuras sold for €9,786.

In the area of Philhellenic and Historical Objects, the most notable offering was an ornate monogrammed gold cigarette case once owned by Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first governor of modern Greece. The filigreed case fetched a whopping €73,392. A watch which once belonged to Greek national poet Dionysios Solomos sold for €26.910.
