The European Parliament named one of its chambers after Konstantinos Mitsotakis, a former Greek prime minister and honorary president of Greece’s conservative New Democracy party.
A special ceremony was held in Brussels on November 29 to honour the late statesman, who passed away in May, aged 98. The ceremony was attended by Mitsotakis’ daughter, Dora Bakoyannis, a former Greek foreign minister, and his son, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who is the leader of New Democracy.
Also in attendance were Eurodeputies from several political groups, deputies and members of New Democracy, as well as European Commissioners Dimitris Avramopoulos and Christos Stylianides.
German MEP and head of the European People’s Party (EPP), Manfred Weber, together with European Parliament President Antonio Tajani, unveiled a marble plaque.
Weber described Konstantinos Mitsotakis as a “great politician who dedicated his life to Greece and to Europe”.
“It was an honour to be at the inauguration,” said Weber.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Kyriakos Mitsotakis said his father served the public interest and realised that the unification of Europe could bring peace and prosperity.
Outside the chamber, there are excerpts from poets Kostis Palamas, Victor Hugo and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
“It was a great day for us, for New Democracy and for Greece,” said Dora Bakoyannis. “My father loved poetry and I believe the three excerpts… fully express his soul and character.”
Konstantinos Mitsotakis was first elected to the Greek Parliament in 1946. He served as prime minister of Greece from April 1990 to October 1993.
