Hellenic Bank, third largest Cypriot lender, said that it decided to appoint Youssef Nasr, a former HSBC banker, as chairman of its board of directors.

The appointment of Nasr, a Lebanese-born US citizen, already is subject to approval by the European Central Bank, the lender said in a emailed statement on Tuesday.

Nasr studied at the Cambridge University where he got his degree in mathematics and received his master of business administration (MBA) degree at the Harvard University, the bank said. He joined HSBC Group in 1976 and retired in 2010 having served both as chairman as well as in senior management positions in several locations including New York, Paris, London, Toronto, Vancouver, Sao Paulo and Dubai. He also served as HSBC’s chief executive in various positions at HSBC US, HSBC North America, HSBC Brazil, HSBC South America and HSBC North Africa.

He is currently the chairman of board of directors at Metin Mitchell & Company, a Dubai-based executive search and management advisory firm and a member of the board of directors of Brookfield Asset Management, “one of the largest alternative asset managers in the world with total assets under management over $250bn (€215m).

“He is also involved in various capacities with other organizations in the US and China,” Hellenic said adding that Nasr “is currently involved in teaching at the FIDE Program, which is sponsored by the Central Bank of Malaysia, to train financial institution directors in the areas of corporate governance, risk management, strategy and leadership. He is also teaching at the Executive MBA Program at the American University of Beirut as well as working on an ad-hoc basis on consulting projects”.
