The Greek Education ministry has announced that about 7,000 refugee children will be attending classes in Greek primary and secondary schools this year – up by 2,000 from last year.

More specifically; 2,439 refugee children staying in apartments and hostels will be attending morning school schedules, while 2,360 staying in refugee camps will be attending afternoon schedules all over the country.

According to Education Ministry Deputy Secretary General, Giorgos Angelopoulos; who made the announcement, about 2,000 refugee students will be enrolling in a total of 1,000 schools and 30 kindergartens within the next two weeks.

In the thirteen months that the government-sponsored refugee education program has been in place, around 5,000 refugee children have been attending Greek schools – approximately 40% of the total number of refugee kids that had attended in 2016.

The Deputy Secretary General claimed that these numbers amount to a European record, adding that the Greek teachers’ community overwhelmingly embraced the program all over the country.

Angelopoulos admitted some issues stemming from the number of participating teachers and their overall qualifications, adding that 211 deputy teachers have already been hired and another 170 are expected to be hired soon.
