Head Of Greek Orthodox Church To Make Historic Visit To Jamaica
He currently serves as the Ruling Hierarch (head) of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Mexico, Central America, Columbia, Venezuela, and the Caribbean Islands under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople (now called Istanbul) in Turkey, according to jamaica-gleaner.
This will be the first visit of a Metropolitan Archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Church to Jamaica. The Orthodox Church (usually referred to as the Eastern or Greek Orthodox Church) considers herself to be the original Christian Church founded by Jesus Christ and His apostles, which is organically and historically the same Church that came fully into being at Pentecost (Acts 2). Today, the Orthodox Church is one of three main Christian groups, the others being Roman Catholic and Protestant and is by far the oldest. The Orthodox Church constitutes the second-largest Christian group in the world. Some 350-million people identify themselves as Orthodox.
The Orthodox Jamaica Mission was established on April 24, 2015 by the Metropolitan-Archbishop of Mexico, in response to the efforts of a young Jamaican, Moses Myers, who converted to Orthodox Christianity (from a Pentecostal Holiness Church) in March 2014.
According to Moses Myers, the purpose of the mission of the Archdiocese is to proclaim the Gospel of Christ, to teach and spread the Orthodox Christian Faith, to energise, to cultivate, and to guide the life of the Church in Jamaica according to the Orthodox Christian faith and tradition.
