Man jailed for abusing son in Chios migrant camp
A court on Chios has sentenced a 32-year-old Syrian migrant to a total of five years in prison, without parole, for physically abusing his 3-year-old son last Tuesday at the Souda refugee camp.
The attack, which occurred in the camp showers, was filmed on a phone and posted on social media.
The court said he intentionally beat the child and posted the video online in order to blackmail his estranged wife to go to Chios from Turkey with their 2-year-old daughter.
The woman had apparently decided to leave the suspect, taking their daughter with her.
The man then left Turkey and crossed to Chios with the boy, who is now being looked after in care.
