Tsipras-Trump underline “close friendship” between Greece-US
Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras spoke on the telephone with US President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday.
PM Tsipras congratulated Trump on his US presidential election victory and “underlined the close friendship and cooperation between the Greek and American people.”
Tsipras and Trump reportedly discussed Greece’s “crucial role for peace and security” in the surrounding region, “especially at a time of increasing destabilisation.”
There was no immediate confirmation that the Cyprus Problem negotiations were discussed between the two officials.
US President Barack Obama visited Greece earlier this month and expressed to Tsipras that he was “encouraged by the progress that has been made” between Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.
Additionally, a reference was made by Trump to the “great efforts made by the Greek people to face the economic and refugee crises.”
Tsipras and Trump agreed it was important to strengthen strategic cooperation between the two countries, following up from Obama’s visit.
Lastly, they agreed to maintain regular communication over the coming period.
