ELSTAT: 230,000 children facing extreme poverty in Greece
More than 4,512,000 Greeks are facing poverty, with children being especially vulnerable, as 230,744 live in households with no income.
According to the ELSTAT study published by the Imerisia newspapers, about 39.9% of the country’s population is deprived of essential goods and services, such as food and heating, with the rate increasing to 44.5% for those aged 0-17 years old.
About one in six households live in unsuitable buildings with leaks, humidity and other problems.
The study results relate to the population that cannot meet financial needs in at least three of the nine following goods and services:
Payment of monthly bills (such as rent, loan installments etc)
Food, which includes meat, fish or vegetables of an equivalent nutritional value every other day
Heating
Telecommunications
Color television
Washing machine
Passenger car
Week-long vacation
