The management of Thessaloniki’s Aristotle University was on Monday preparing the institution to return to normal after the last participants in the unauthorized, pro-refugee No Border Camp packed up and left the site.

Hundreds of Greeks, Italians, Spaniards and Dutch activists have been camping on the site — specifically on the campuses of the Law and Philosophy faculties — for the past 10 days.

They have staged rallies in the city, to express solidarity with migrants, and last weekend relocated hundreds of migrants from reception centers in the broader region to the campuses.

The deanship of the Law School said on Monday that the camp participants had left much damage in their wake including many broken doors and interference with the plumbing system to extend the water supply to makeshift kitchens and showers set up for the camp. The campers also left much graffiti on faculty walls.

“For 10 whole days, the country’s largest university, right in the city center, was turned into a type of ghetto, with its own laws and regulations, with its own policing by occupants, with its own power structure, with constant blackmail of the type ‘open up or we’ll break everything,'” the deanship said in a statement.

It remained unclear how much it will cost to repair the damage
