The unraveling of a huge drug ring operating in Exarchia this week was hailed by Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis Wednesday, who called for permanent police patrols in the city center district which at times had almost become a no-go zone for police.

“Uncovering the gang in Exarchia is a good start, but more must be done,” he told Skai Radio on Wednesday, adding that the area had suffered from both a lack of policing and, at other times, overpolicing.

He also revealed that, apart from this week’s raids, police also conducted more than 50 checks of businesses in the area.
