Rail workers holding protest at Transport Ministry
Workers on the national and suburban rail network were staging a protest outside the Transport Ministry in the northern Athenian suburb of Papagou on Tuesday morning.
The workers are demanding a meeting with the ministry’s leadership in order to express their grievances over the government’s plan to privatize fixed-track transport. They are also calling on the government to reintroduce a collective labor contract for all rail workers.
Disgruntled railway staff have been staging strikes and walkouts over the past couple of months to protest the privatization, which so far has attracted just one bidder.
Greece’s privatization agency TAIPED is set this week to ask the sole suitor, Italy’s Trenitalia, to raise its bid for the company.
