A 40-year-old man was found dead in his cell by prison wardens at the Aghios Stefanos jail in Patra, authorities said on Saturday.

The cause of death was unknown and, according to preliminary examinations, the body bore no signs of injuries, bruises or a struggle.

Authorities said the precise cause will be determined when an autopsy is completed. The inmate was serving a lengthy prison sentence on a rape-related conviction.
