Constantopoulou aims to start own party
Former parliamentary speaker Zoe Constantopoulou has declared her intention to start her own party with the aim of bringing about the government’s collapse.
Speaking on Skai TV’s “Istories” (Stories) program broadcast last night, the radical left politician said that she intends to start a new movement soon.
“Of course I will take initiatives as political organizations and parties are concerned and of course I will do all that is necessary to bring down this regime, which is represented by Mr [Alexis] Tsipras,” said Constantopoulou, who left SYRIZA last summer and stood with Popular Unity, the anti-austerity party formed by other leftist rebels, in the September general elections.
Constantopoulou described how her relationship with Tsipras broke down after he signed a new bailout agreement with Greece’s lenders in Brussels on July 13. She insisted that there was no rift between the two before that date and that she felt Tsipras was a broken man going into the talks.
“I had sent him a text message on the night of the negotiations telling him that he had to come back, not to throw away the political capital that he had and not to throw away the hopes of so many young people that trusted him,” she said. The former house speaker said that the prime minister did not reply to her message.
