Greece Faces Measles Increase

A new report from Greece’s National Centre for the Control and Prevention of Diseases says it is impossible to rule out not only a rise in measles cases but also their spread across the country.

It reports that 77 new cases have pushed up the total to just over 1,260.

In late December, the body confirmed 922 measles cases in Greece, most concerning Roma children and people aged 25-44 who were not properly immunized.

This latest report claims the profile of patients remains the same; mainly Greek citizens, mostly young children from Roma communities and people from the general population between 25-44.

Scientists said lab test confirmation would make it impossible “to exclude the increase of cases and their extension to other geographic areas”.

The World Health Organization (WHO) in March last year said there could be a measles epidemic across Europe.

WHO regional director, Doctor Zsuzsanna Jakab, warned that “Outbreaks will continue in Europe, as elsewhere, until every country reaches the level of immunization needed to fully protect their populations.”
