Gender change: democracy, majority and the identity of the… absurd

Would you ever let politicians decide on the best treatment for your health condition? Of course not.
However, in the case of gender ID change at the age of 15, the Parliament has decided, and politicians have set the Greek society on fire, in their complete ignorance of the critical issues transgender people are facing.
While in the rest of Europe, WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) addresses all aspects of this burning issue from a scientific point of view, the discussion held inside the Parliament was based on political stereotypes, without taking scientists into account.

Dr. Konstantinos Konstantinidis, MD, PSC, PhD, urologist- andrologist, President of International Andrology and Director of the Sexual Medicine Clinic in Athens Medical Centre, speaks on the matter that has divided Greek society during the past few days.

“The same way an unmarried, single mother is not cast out of society and men who prefer to have sex with men are no longer fags, but friends, colleagues and associates, transgender people must be accepted by society and gender dysphoria at any age should be seen as an actual issue that needs to be managed through science and not through witchcrafts and spells”, points out Dr. Konstantinidis.

“Gender dysphoria, like gender euphoria, usually exists in childhood. I.e. boys enjoy playing war games and girls like to play with dolls, and all is well since no one will accuse them for their choices. However, a boy who feels like a girl, and the other way round, will experience criticism and rejection that will devastate his personality!”

The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) is an international association of doctors, attorneys, sociologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, journalists and politicians who aim at promoting and supporting the overall health and psychological well-being of transgender persons, while ensuring public, political support on matters relevant to acceptance and public image.

According to the President of International Andrology and President of International Andrology and Director of the Sexual Medicine Clinic in Athens Medical Centre, the vision of this international organization is to bring together scientists of all fields, who will help towards healthcare improvement, research development, education and promotion of matters that involve respect and dignity of transgender persons and those experiencing gender dysphoria.

One of WPATH’s roles is to issue scientific guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of transgender persons and those going through gender dysphoria.

Many may not be familiar with this Association, but it is as esteemed as the World Health Organization. Its conferences are attended by at least five thousand scientists. Its European partner is EPATH. Its recent Conference, held in Belgrade, was attended by five hundred specialists from Europe alone.
Dr. Konstantinidis adds “We all know, of course, that in democracy it is the many who decide and the few who surrender to politics and to everyone this is considered possible and normal. But this is only because man has so far failed to come up with a better system for governance …

On the other hand, in science, it would be wrong to allow a minority of people , who are unfamiliar with your health issues, decide on a life-saving treatment and ignore the opinion of a top-ranking specialised physician…
Just like you would never leave others vote over the best cancer drug, but have the best scientists decide instead, when it comes to gender issues and sexual orientation, your neighbour’s opinion will never matter”.
Transgender people are no longer left in the darkness of monsters and prejudices but are treated by the world scientific community as equal members of our society. To be healthy, a person must be physically, mentally and politically fit. Without health policies, societies would turn into jungles and we would plunge back into the Middle Ages, say scientists who operate on people who opt for gender change.

As Dr. Konstantinidis suggests in a quite illustrative manner, it would be rather strange to tell a man that being attracted to women is abnormal and to persuade him that having sex with men is normal behaviour… Likewise, it would be absurd to force a woman into a relationship with another woman, just because being attracted to men is abnormal…

And if that person was ever to protest against these rules, people would say that the many are right, and that is why they are “normal” while the few are wrong and are “abnormal” …
“Imagine your friends and neighbours or your parents and teachers telling you that being in love with Nicky is wrong and you should fall in love with Nicolas instead…

WPATH has issued guidelines on diagnosis and management of gender dysphoria and it would be best if politicians had shown interest in learning about them.

The arbitrary conclusion that the age of 15 is the decisive point for gender identity is absolutely wrong, as gender identity is established since early childhood. Why should a transgender person try to hide its sexual orientation? A transgender person maybe attracted to men or women regardless of his own appearance.
In other words, gender is defined, but anatomy differs, at least until corrected. Then the body is no longer a prison and the person can freely express himself.
