The building of the former “Villa Amalias” squat in the city center of Athens has been renovated and will soon begin to operate as a high school.

For over two decades the building had been occupied by anarchists and operated as a squat, live venue and social center, until it was forcibly evacuated by the police in 2012.

In the past the building had been used as school, from which many important Greeks graduated, such as lyricist Lefteris Papadopoulos, painter Alekos Fasinos and the Archbishop of Albania Anastasios.

In presenting the newly-renovated building, the Mayor of Athens Giorgos Kaminis revealed that the school will be named after the late director Theodoros Angelopoulos, who also graduated from the school.
