140 more refugees land on Chios and Lesvos in past 24 hours
According to the refugee crisis coordinating body, 140 more refugees and migrants reached the shores of the islands of Chios and Lesvos in the past 24 hours. The conditions on the two islands are becoming increasingly unbearable as the the facilities on both are overcrowded. The city of Mytilene, capital of the island of Lesvos, hosts 5,497 people in centres capable of holding 3,500 people, while the Chios facilities are hosting 3,399 refugees and migrants, a number triple of that it can carry. The islands in the eastern Aegean Sea are bearing the brunt of the refugee flows, as they are hosting 12,671 people, a lot more that 7,450 official spots available. According to the most recent official count, there were a total of nearly 60,000 refugees and migrants in Greece.
