Rio Olympics: Korakaki bags the first medal for Greece
Anna Korakaki has won the first medal for Greece in the Olympic Games being held in Rio. Korakaki took the bronze medal in the 10m air pistol final on Sunday.
Chinese athlete Zhang Mengxue came first with 199.4 points, followed by Russia’s Vitalina Batsarashhina with 197.1 points and Korakaki in third place with 177.7 points.
Praise for Korakaki’s achievement came via Twitter from Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis and PASOK leader Fofi Gennimata, among others.
This is the first medal for Greece in the Olympic shooting competition since 1920, when the Greek national team won the silver medal in Antwerp. Overall Greece has 3 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze Olympic medals in shooting.
