Greece worried about impact of UK vote on tourism

The outcome of Britain’s vote on membership of the European Union could have a negative impact on Greece’s tourism industry, an official warned Friday.

Andreas Andreas, head of the Association of Hellenic Tourism Enterprises (SETE) on Friday posted a message on his Twitter account saying that the decision could have “massive and unpredictable consequences, also for Greek tourism.”

The value of the pound fell dramatically against the euro and the US dollar Friday morning as the referendum outcome emerged showing a near 52-48 percent split for leaving.

British holidaymakers, who make up the biggest chunk of foreign visitors to the debt-hit nation, may be deterred from the higher cost of vacating here.

Nearly 15 percent more Britons visited Greece in 2015 than in 2014 to add up to almost 2.4 million.
