Police operation to evacuate remaining makeshift refugee camps near Idomeni
Authorities on Tuesday morning proceeded with an operation to evacuate another two makeshift refugee camps near the Idomeni border post in extreme northern Greece. One of the camps is located on an intersection leading to the Evzoni border crossing with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (fYRoM) and the other is adjacent to a petrol station, also a few kilometers from the frontier.
A main north-south highway was closed after dawn to accommodate the evacuation of the refugees, mostly displaced people from Syria and Iraq, but also groups of irregular migrants that took advantage of the refugee flows to enter Greece in a bid to reach preferred destinations in central and western Europe.
