PM Tsipras and Mitsotakis clash over public order and terrorism

The Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and leader of the main opposition Kyriakos Mitsotakis had the opportunity to butt heads in Parliament, during a discussion on public order and security. The debate in Parliament was carried out at the request of Mr. Mitsotakis in light of the recent terrorist attacks in Brussels.

“Our country is facing a financial and refugee crisis, but not a security crisis” argued PM Tsipras who blasted New Democracy for attempting to associate refugees with terrorism, shortly before the tourist season is about to begin. According to the Prime Minister, New Democracy is raising issues expected by far right parties and at a moment when Europe is praising Greek authorities in tackling terrorism.

In response the New Democracy leader insisted upon his criticism of the government’s management of the refugee crisis and underlined the need for stability and security. Mr. Mitsotakis accused the government of not taking public order seriously, citing the situation in Idomeni and regular clashes with the police.
