Emergency landing at Larnaca airport due to air piracy
An Egyptian Airlines plane has asked for an emergency landing a Larnaca airport on suspicion of air piracy on Tuesday, initial information to SigmaLive said.
Leonidas Leonidou, the spokesperson of the Fire Squad, told SigmaLive that there actually has been a case of piracy on the Airbus, and that trucks of the fire squad have gone to the site. Leonidou said that they are on guard.
Police said that the air traffic control was informed at 8:30 am by the plane. The plane has landed at Larnaca, and the Crisis Centre have been informed to respond, the police added.
The plane landed at around 9:00 am, and there are 81 passengers on board. The flight is MS-181 of EgyptAir and had departed from Alexandria airport and was headed for Cairo.
Sources told Sigma TV that the air pirate have said that they don’t want any police or military to approach the plane.
They have also let women and children of Egyptian origin to exit the plane, leaving all the rest on the plane.
Flights out or Larnaca airport have been redirected, while the airport remains closed.
Sigma’s sources said that it was one hijacker.
