Farmers convene on Monday to decide next strike actions
The nationwide coordinating committee of road blocks set up by farmers has arranged a general assembly of the 68 blocks that participated in the major rallies that took place in Athens on Friday and Saturday, in order to decide whether to escalate their protests actions and their alternatives.
According to Vangelis Boutas, on behalf of the coordinating committee, the farmers insist on the government withdrawing its reforms on the pension system and taxation, Additionally, they want the government to take measures to address their high cost of production, such as tax-free diesel, reducing the cost of electricity for agricultural use and abolishing the VAT on agricultural supplies.
The deadline for signing their letter of demands and proposals ended on Sunday, with the coordinating committee expected to send it to the Prime Minister and political leaders.
Meanwhile, as of midday on Sunday, the Tempi Valley has been shut down, with farmers announcing that they are expecting an invitation from the government for talks, based on the proposals they have submitted with the block of Mikrothives and others.
The farmers in Rodopi have also decided to close down the customs office at Nymphea for the next 72 hours. As such, no vehicles will be allowed to cross over into Bulgaria until Wednesday, which is expected to cause further tension.
