Mitsotakis visits refugee center on Lesvos
Conservative opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday visited Lesvos, the Aegean island on the frontline of Europe’s refugee crisis, to see the situation at first hand.
Mitsotakis, who was accompanied by New Democracy’s shadow immigration minister Vassilis Kikilias, visited the Kara Tepe facility, where the main registration process for Syrian asylum-seekers is handled. The two were expected to visit the Morias migrant camp later in the day.
The conservative chief visited Lesvos as hundreds of migrants, helped by good weather conditions, arrived on the island.
Elected as new ND leader last month, Mitsotakis has avoided overt criticism of the government’s handling of the migration crisis.
