Fire breaks out at Dubai hotel ahead of New Year celebration
Fire has broken out in the Address Downton Hotel in Dubai close to the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, on Thursday evening.
The fire erupted as Dubai prepares for its annual New Year’s Eve fireworks display, a major event which takes place nearby.
Burning debris fell from the building as firefighters arrived at the scene. The cause of the blaze is unclear, and it is not currently clear whether there are any casualties.
As yet, there has been no indication as to what caused the fire.
The government in Dubai has tweeted in Arabic that the fire broke out on the 20th floor of the 302-metre high building.
One witness, who was celebrating the incoming year at the a bar some three kilometres distant, has told SigmaLive English that the fire was clearly visible. “We can see smoke pouring into the sky,” he stated. “It’s one of the biggest, most beautiful hotels in the region, so this is quite a shock. The speed of the fire has scared everyone,” he added.
Another witness who was in the hotel when the fire started has said that he ran out of the building, but is not yet sure whether all those inside had been safely evacuated. He added that the fire spread upwards very rapidly, and parts of the building flew off, seemingly from the heat of the blaze.
