The first snow started to fall in the picturesque mountain region of Pilio from Wednesday afternoon, while low temperatures turned rain to sleet in the coastal town of Volos and the surrounding plains.

About 20cm of snow were reported at an altitude of around 600m above sea level, in the villages of Portaria, Makrynitsa, Zagora, Milies, Vyzitsa and Drakeia.

Despite an all-out mobilisation by Magnesia regional authorities to keep roads open, the icy conditions claimed their first victim on the already problematic Volos-Velestinos motorway at around 16:00 when a motorist lost control of his vehicle and died when it slammed into a truck parked on the side of the road.
