Xiros and another 27 indicted for Korydallos escape plan
Convicted terrorist Christodoulos Xiros and another 27 individuals were on Monday indicted to stand trial for a plan to break out inmates from Korydallos prison, particularly members of the “Conspiracy of Cells of Fire” terrorist organisation.
According to an appeals justices’ council, the so-called ‘Gorgopotamos’ plan to blow up the perimeter wall of the prison involved a total of 28 conspirators that will face serious charges relating to their membership of a terror group, possession of weapons and possession of explosives.
Among those indicted are the brothers Christos and Gerassimos Tsakalos, their mother Athina Tsakalou and the girlfriends of the two brothers, Evangelia Statiri and Aggeliki Spiropoulou.
According to the charges against them, the accused had drawn up the ‘Gorgopotamos’ plan in the wake of Xiros’ escape in January 2014 and taken preparatory action to carry it out and help the imprisoned ‘Cells of Fire’ terrorists break out from Korydallos prison in Athens.
According to the counter-terrorism squad, the code name for the plan was found in notes written by Xiros in the Anavyssos hideout where he was arrested last January.
