Kountoura: 2015 was an exceptional year for the Greek tourism
The first messages on the course of the Greek tourism in 2016, based on the early reservations, are very encouraging, stressed Alternate Economy, Development and Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura speaking on Friday at the “Destination Thessaloniki Congress”.
Kountoura, who is visiting Thessaloniki on the occasion of the two international tourist exhibitions Philoxenia and Hotelia organised by TIF-Helexpo, characterised 2015 an exceptional year for the Greek tourism during which Greece attracted over 26 million tourists and the revenues reached 14.5 billion euros at least.
During her address she underlined the ministry’s intention to support all efforts for the promotion of the city of Thessaloniki to a popular and attractive destination with tourist arrivals throughout the year adding that the city can become a dominant destination for city breaks in the Balkanic peninsula.
“Our strategic planning includes the promotion of a series of Greek cities in cooperation with the regions, the municipalities, the local communities and the chambers,” she noted and underlined the importance of the promotion of alternative tourism as a lever for the extension of the tourist season in Greece.
She also referred to the important opportunities that creates for the city of Thessaloniki the declaration of 2016 into “Year of Greece and Russia” adding that”ministry and government we will work together in order for Greece to become one of the five top tourist destinations worldwide as well as to promote all the alternative forms of tourism.
On her part deputy ministry of Macedonia and Thrace Maria Kollia Tsarouha in her welcome speech underlined the importance of Thessaloniki as a tourist destination-symbol stressing that “the region is the Holy Grail for a number of peoples and a historic tourist crossroads for all seasons.”
