Central suspect in Koumoutsakos assault visits police
A key suspect in a violent assault on New Democracy MP Giorgos Koumoutsakos handed himself over to police on Friday, a week after the attack outside Parliament, Skai reported.
The 22-year-old, who was caught on video punching Koumoutsakos in the face, is said to have visited the Athens police headquarters voluntarily. He was released and is to testify in the coming days.
Meanwhile another suspect who can be seen in the same video, lashing out at Koumoutsakos, was traced to Menidi, in northern Athens, and given a summons.
He is also expected to testify in the coming days.
Responding to the news of the arrests on his Twitter account, Koumoutsakos wrote a brief message: “At last!”
Koumoutsakos was assaulted during a rally by Pontic Greeks in Athens on November 5 by suspects believed to have links to Golden Dawn. The conservative lawmaker blamed GD for the attack at the rally, which was attended by several MPs from the neo-Nazi party.
The rally by the Pontic Greeks was organized to protest comments by Education Minister Nikos Filis, according to which the slaughter of tens of thousands of ethnic Greeks living on the shores of the Black Sea by Turkish forces between 1914 and 1923 was ethnic cleansing and not genocide.
