“National issues are not under negotiation. They constitute a red line. And there is no room for discounts,” New Democracy (ND) leader Evangelos Meimarakis said on Wednesday.

Meimarakis is visiting Chios for the celebrations for the 103 years since the liberation of the island from the Turks.

He underlined that “united we can overcome the current crisis” adding that “if we followed another course and based on social cohesion we can overcome that crisis.”

He also sent a message to Turkey: “We wish to live in peace with them. And they have to understand that, because sometimes they provoke us. I hope that it has become clear that despite the economic crisis, and maybe a moral crisis, our national interests are not under negotiation. They constitute a red line for us. And there is no room for discounts.”

The main opposition leader also sent a message to Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras: “And it is the foreigners that should first understand that. And the prime minister needs to inform his interlocutors.”
