Police officer facing extortion charges
An officer serving at a Thessaloniki police department was facing charges over his alleged involvement in an extortion and drug ring, authorities announced on Thursday.
According to the police, Thessaloniki officers detained several members of the alleged ring, including three prisoners serving sentences at Trikala Prison.
Authorities believe the ring specialized in the extortion of shop owners, forcing them to pay members of the organization in exchange for protection.
The suspects are also believed to have delivered drugs to prisoners at correctional facilities.
